Uhyeagh.  I got done reading about Lincoln and the civil war and realized,
1.  Lincoln started mandatory military service in this country
(with a tip of the hat to "Gangs of New York", a sloooow but seemingly 
accurate
look at 1860s New York and nativists vs. Irish)
2.  Lincoln started income tax here.
(Barf      :)%%    'nuf said.)
3.  Lincoln authorized Seward to arrest and hold hostile newspaper editors.
4.  Lincoln spent much of his time listening to pleas from "Republicans" 
seeking jobs.   (the parties are so different now, I think quote marks are 
appropriate.)
Okay, maybe not  facistic, but a far cry from Jeffersonian ideals.
