Gervais, Ronald J. 'The Socialist and the Silk Stockings: F's Double
Allegiance.' Mosaic, 15 (Jun 1982), 79-92.

In major works written during the "Red Scare" just after W.W.I and
during the "Red Decade" of the 1930's, Fitz cast his responses to
Marxism into the form of ambivalent literary debates in which the
opponents express as much attraction for the other side as they do
attachment to their own. His biography and correspondence during these
periods also reveal his two mindedness toward Leftist ideology. For on
this subject, too, Fitz cultivated his famed double vision, his ability,
as he described it, " to hold two opposed ideas in the mind, at the same
time, and still retain the ability to function."

Ah, drunken tenderness is the blight
upon the Lefty turning Right
but we are embarked on a twisting turning journey into the American
night.

Lift up your skirts ladies and open your books.
