Particularly when the aftermath of the actual bombs which fell on Belgrade
just before, or Kabul &c right after, were graphically imaged in the world
media. There's nothing in the paragraph to tie it in such a restricted way
to the U.S., and most of the wording Pynchon uses in the paragraph resists
any specific application to the experience of 9/11.
