You've come a long way (NPI) Glenn, but you're
only about half way home. The word you're looking
for, the word that has been lurking behind the deeply
conservative nature of most of P's writing, the word
which western civilization really didn't begin to appreciate
until the first half the last century is FEEDBACK. Up until then,
it was assumed that there was an infinte supply of randomness in
the universe that could be drawn upon to ensure objectivity, and the
separation of variables into two camps: Independent and Dependent.
Alas, there is no such clean separation. Randomness is increasing
with the expansion of the universe, but at any given time is limited
like the speed of light. In other words, it's okay to advocate the
smoking of your own cigar, but you need to begin reading your
own shit. You must, to use a Pynchonian trope, lock yourself
in the toilet of the toiletship and learn to understand the finer
nuances of your own waste. No one is capable of doing this
on their own, however, so the lock must eventually go. It's
just a prop, like training wheels, to get you started and
keep you from being ashamed. But shit happens, Glenn,
and doors with locks perpetuate the wish that our worst
fears- the ultimate feedback- the embodiment of our
own waste, can be kept out, or down, or separate
from that which will become us, our seed. But
ultimately such wishful thinking is a sterile
exercise.
