Referring to China again, along with a drive to
embrace global brands and capital, perhaps the most
powerful social current is the underground Christian
church movement -- fundamental evangelicals who meet
in private homes, in defiance of the Party, many of
whom have been arrested and imprisoned over the past
few years for their religious beliefs and activities.

Then there's the underground democracy and union
movement, which is also actively, and quite savagely
persecuted.
