But "true" nonetheless, based on the reception of
Pynchon's Foreword to _1984_. Less than a handful of
readers on Pynchon-L claim not to read a reference to
9-11 in the Foreword, and it's far from clear that
these readers are expressing honest opinions in good
faith -- instead, their comments have had more to do
with the ongoing interpersonal dynamics of this forum,
where ideas are often opposed simply because somebody
doesn't like the person who's expressing those
opinions. Out there in the real world, reviewers rave
about it, and readers who are not entrenched in the
P-list's personality battles (readers in some of the
other online venues that have discussed the Foreword)
have no trouble understanding when Pynchon (if not
Orwell) is talking about our world "circa 2003".
