if P does raise the identity question, why? he doesn't say that the novel is not what it seems. he says, in the hands of readers whose political motives are opposed to or radically different from Orwell's (i.e., the McCarthy era anti-Communist ideologues in the US) the novel's message is not exactly what Orwell intended.
