By the way, and for the record, Robert's exhibited at
best a strained politesse to me on list, occsaionally
according me a terse and not uncomplimentary
acknowledgement, but more typically ranging from
sniffy dismissals to smarmily
transparently-veiled("some," "those," et al., though
it's the condescension and feigned/fey indignation
that are esp. irritating) putdowns to outright insult.
Again, snobs vs. slobs. I'd prefer the so-called "ad
hominem," as at least it'd be more honest ...
Offlist, he started out as persistently, distractingly
argumentative (even as I was taking it from the other
end from His Duditude--talk about yr rock/hard place
dilemma ...) but soon strolled right on up to complete
bastardhood (which Mr. Hollander has to date kindly
demurred from). Though I will admit that one of the
few actual (albeit again terse) compliments I ever got
from him I received offlist as well, though that only
raises the question, why not on? 'Fraid teh otehr
kids'll laugh at you or somesuch? Sheesh ...
Anyway, sorry to harsh on yr mellow. I'm all for
peace, love and understanding here, but I've hardly
been the recipient of it from "some." Okay, Robt. 'n'
Morris, to name names, though the latter has also had
the decency to be downright polite to me as well, and
in public, at that. But there's a certain
theatricality about this sudden turn from assholism to
lovidovitude that grates on me, the recurrent old boy
gentility which substitutes for plain ol' civility
here but which nonetheless allows such sideswipes as
Robert's to pointedly tiptoe across the stage ...
