Spybot, which is free, does a very good job of cleaning out unwanted spyware,
after the fact. I've just downloaded the free version of Add-Aware, which I
think will, to some degree, block them from getting on board in the first
place. The thing is, not all cookies are bad, so you have to manage the
software you use as a blocker or cleaner. Add-Aware also has a pop-up blocker,
but till now I've been using "Popup Killer," also free, which works well.
Of course the fight will never be over.
