Whose lenses were they? A prostitutes.
Why does Pynchon provide only these details about the owner of the
lenses?
We don't know her name, but we know what she did for a living. And, the
narrator tells us little else about her, only that prostitutes work "off
the books" and are paid in cash. So you ain't gonna find her. No wonder
why she ain't got a name.
Is that a good thing? Seems to be. Hobbes pays in cash.
