This kind of e-mail fraud is called "Nigeria Connection" by the German
police. It comes in various "disguises" -- last week I've won 500.000 $ in a
lottery I've never played:
First e-mail:
Sir/Madam
We are pleased to inform you of the result of the Lottery Winners
International programs held on the 8th of NOVEMBER. 2003. Your e-mail
address attached to ticket number 30511056441-3516 with serial number
797-013428 drew lucky numbers 09-25-37-31-64-36 which
Consequently won in the 2nd category, you have therefore been approved
for a lump sum pay out of US$ 500,000.00 (Five Hundred Thousand United
States Dollars)
Just for the fun of it I've answered to the mail (and informed the local
police, I know a guy there who is busy fighting internet crime, mostly
children pornography, but also illegal spam):
Second e-mail:
when the winner has been truly confirmed to win, we then
send/fax the Payment Scheme (Form D5) that also have to be completed and
returned via fax with a compulsory "Processing fee" of four hundred and
ninety-five euros (495.00 Euros). As that is what we charge for our
services to handling and filing for your winning prize.
After you have sent the money you will never again hear from them.
So I wrote:
"Ok, as soon as I get the 500.000 you will get the 495.00 Euros."
After this the e-mail address has disappeared.
