leer (n.): a sly look or glance expressing immodest desire, malicious
intent, etc.
If anything, the "genially" might offset the "malicious intent," but (to me,
at least) a leer in its most common usage is the expression of sexual
desire; it's one of the few facial expressions that *can* convey or suggest
sexuality.
