Terra Nostra was pretty baroque and engaging IMHO.
(a new dalkey archive edition has just been released)
I admit his last output from the 80s and 90s has been
pretty boring.
p.s. for the russian enthusiast among you, I recommend
Black Earth by Andrew Meier, just for the chapters on
Chechnya alone.
