pynchonoid:
> If the shoes have metal taps, they're not
soft-shoes.
jbor:
>>So? The soft-shoe shuffle is still a tap dance.
After about 1925, yes, in what some observers might
call a degraded or decadent form of the original
soft-shoe dance. And soft shoes still don't have
metal taps.
"DL had to stare down at her feet, like an amateur tap
dancer." (103.29)
jbor:
>>The simile confirms DL's evasiveness in what has
>>preceded, and her
>>gesture
>>here conveys embarrassment and regret.
And you're still doing that old soft-shoe. I know
amateur tap dancers who look at their feet not out of
"embarrassment and regret" -- they are proud of their
performance -- but because they haven't had the
professional trainning necessary to know to do
otherwise. As usual, you revise Pynchon's text to
conform to your preconceived notion of what it has to
mean, and you draw the argument out to absurd lengths
rather than admit the absurdity of your
interpretation. I suggest you cut your losses and
move on to the next chapter. More likely, alas, you'll
feel compelled to answer this in a childish attempt to
maintain the upper hand in your never-ending P-list
oneupsmanship game. Google away!
