If you want the "amateur tap dancer" metaphor to mean
shame and embarrassment in this passage, nobody's
going to stop you, go for it -- it remains an
idiosyncratic, unconvincing reading of Pynchon's text.

you twist Pynchon's text to conform to your
preconceived judgements, go for it, although the
