You can't possibly have wanted the US to "intervene" (if by that you mean 
militarily) in that instance, can you?  That would have been the start of 
WW3.  And your claim that the symbol was "empty" is belied by the response 
it generated from the Communist government.  It was a very potent and 
greatly feared symbol.

That is a very arrogant statement.  Many gave their lives in an attempt to 
gain democracy.  They might have failed, but the choice of symbol was a 
message heard and seen round the world.  They were as clear as could be.  
The fact that injustice still existed in the "free" world does not diminish 
the validity of their desires and hopes, nor their courage.

Let's ask a question.  If you were one of them, what would your choice have 
been, either in symbol or action?
