The symbol was a clear message to their rulers and the world of what they 
wanted.  The reality of the situation is that the overthrow of that regime 
will have to come from within.  The US can't control a country like China 
economically.  They are too big, and there are alway other countries who 
will be willing to fill any void left by the US.  Is that why you think it 
was an empty symbol - No overt support from the US?
