Lots of good background on the alternative creation
story in the p-list archives (the topic comes up again
in M&D), if you care to find it.

For those of you who don't know, Genesis presents two
creation stories, markedly different in character and
the theology they support:  the one features a loving,
creator God ("elohim"), the other offers a punishing,
patriarchal God ("yahweh"); guess which prevails.  For
 nuance and great insight, I suggest _God:  A
Biography_ by Jack Miles, an interpretative tour de
force that remains readable and enjoyable.
