I also found this bit from the 1920s:
"At cabin creek Mother Jones was arrested for inciting a riot.
She told the State Police that she was reading the constitution."

Actually, I had something similar in mind concerning the 1960s:
I remember reading somewhere that during anti-War and/or Civil
Rights demonstrations, protesters were reading the constitution
and some representatives of the police took it for subversive
ultra-leftist propaganda. But I cannot recall where I read it.
