If "veteran" is taken in its military meaning is rather

The "since the war" sentence has to do with his having changed his name
to RC.
RC and Moonpie changed their names and erased their past since the war.
Why? We don't know.
In the flashback bar scene we understand that RC has been someplace that
has given him deep eyes and a mortally cautious bearing.
We also learn that he is a "Bush Vet."
Spells Vietnam. Right?
OK, it does.
But why did he change his name?
And why take these names?
I mean, what's wrong with Joe and Sally McHide or something?
