"I'm in here with a thirty-aught-six I don't even know how to load" (VL,
Ch. 4, p. 49) Let's start with some Tom Waits music for a moment to set
the scene for us, perhaps "16 Shells from a 30-06" goes a little sum'in
like this:
	Plugged 16 shells from a thirty-aught-six
And the black crow flew through
	A hole in the sky
And I spent all my buttons on an old pack mule
And I made me a ladder from a pawn shop marimba
And I leaned it up against a dandelion tree
Now that we is pree-pared for the presentation...
"In 1906, the United States military adopted a new, more powerful
cartridge which was destined to become one of the most popular and
famous cartridges ever developed. The 30-06 has proven itself on
battlefields around the world in World War I, World War II, Korea, Viet
Nam and untold other hot spots. It has been chambered in bolt action
rifles, semi-auto rifles, heavy machine guns and even used from
aircraft. Quite a distinguished service record. When our Doughboys
returned home from World War I they began asking for civilian firearms
chambered for the '06. Gunmakers responded by manufacturing single
shots, bolt actions, semi-autos, and even lever actions chambered to
meet the demand. After World War II and Korea, the demand grew even
greater. In the field, sportsmen were not disappointed. The 30-06 has
been used to harvest virtually every species of game animal in the
world. It has always proven to be dependable and accurate." Mike Daly

But this is the right gun for Trent's purposes as Mr. Hawks explains to
us.

"With the right loads a hunter armed with a .30-06 can tackle everything
from jackrabbits to elk, and it shoots flat enough to be included with
the long-range big game cartridges. I feel that large, thick-skinned
game should be left to the medium and big bores, but nearly everything
else is within the capabilities of the .30-06 Spfd. It is my
understanding that most Alaskan guides recommend the .30-06 as the
minimum cartridge for use on grizzly and brown bears."

But, can it take out Pigs, if ya know what I mean...
