"and quickly, in an arc unexpectedly graceful, they had all turned
outward, tached up, engaged, and like a time machine departing for the
future, forever too soon for Zoyd, boomed away up the thin cloudpressed
lane." (VL, Ch. 4, p. 55) A few things here. First, the description
of the departure is very Star Trek Next Generation with Captain Jean Luc
telling his crew to "Engage" in that husky British voice. Second, a
HUGE callback to the beginning of the chapter when Mr. Wheeler drives
off into another world, dreamlike in its essence as the fog clears and
we enter a series of flashbacks. And now too, the kids depart into the
cloudpressed lane, off into their own dream world, or perhaps only to
exist in Mr. Wheeler's dreams for a while. In any event, the third
point is this is damn fine writing.
