Two cops arrive while the 'Gang' are down at the lake,
When the Police ask Granny what she's doing, she tells
them "I'm smoking crawdads,but first I need a little
pot." When Buddy finds a crawdad it nips him on the
finger. He & the other 'Cats' split & the police go
after them rather than the Clampetts.

the beverly hillbillies never really j.t.s. but did
get close on a rare occasion (the last season about
the grunions). [...] the smoking crawdads episodes
were the ones where jethro was playing robin hood in
griffith park with ellie may as maid marion and
ellie's chimp was little john. Jethro was really into
robin hood after the clampetts returned from their
trip to england. the episode where the hippies were
going to "smoke" crawdads is one of the funniest
episodes in the history of television. after they
realized what the crawdads were and that granny was
going to smoke them their response was "you cats are
too far out for us!" ...

In 1967, when Granny was with a crowd of hippies at
Los Angeles' Griffith Park, she told a police officer
she needed to find "a little pot." She meant a pot to
cook in, but the joke was that the policeman
misunderstood.

[zombienote: Further, in this episode, Granny talks
with a hippie about "smoking crawdads". Hippie says
thats far out and wonders if they "draw hard" - a
joint-smoking reference. As a child I liked that scene
a lot but never got the idea to smoke pot. Granny
never seemed pro-marijuana.]

The show skewered pretension but was never mean, and
it targeted not just stuffed shirts but beatniks and
hippies (remember when some longhairs declared Granny
the "queen of far-out" after she revealed that she
enjoyed smoking crawdads?).
