I seem to remember Swami Havabanana from Daevid Allen's Pot Head Pixie
world. He and Kevin Ayers (both original members of Soft Machine) were both
into banana referencing. Asked why KA said that Canterbury was the heart of
the cornflake belt and you know how bananas go with cornflakes...

One of Daevid Allen's pen names was The Alien Banana. One of KA's albums
was Bananamour.

 From http://www.cs.berkeley.edu/~kunal/misc/quotes.txt and several others
The Ancient Doctrine of Mind Over Matter:
         I don't mind... and you don't matter.
-- As revealed to reporter G. Rivera by Swami Havabanana

Checking further I find my memory to be false - from
http://www.planetgong.co.uk/
we have from the Gong history section:

"Whilst in Avignon they met up with a cheery Parisian flea market dealer
called Bob Benamou, who had invited Gilli to stay at his house, in the
grounds of which was Dr. Mishra's Ashram/ Retreat run by one Brahmananada -
(a.k.a. Banana Ananda) an old friend from Paris days."
In the mythology he is described thus:

BANANA ANANDA is the great beer yogi whose noble cry "have a lager"
greets his disciples as they enter his primitive cave high up in the
hymnalayas of tibet. his motto is "BANANA NIRVANA MANANA" a phrase worthy
of many days deep contemplation on the many sided meanings inherent in its
profundity. his teaching is that of meditations on the strongest spirits
available. an upright hindoo sage of great magnetism, especially for the
ladies.
