"Only two references are worth noting and both were
acknowledged by Zevon himself: Ross Macdonald and
Thomas Pynchon. Macdonald's crime novels show the dark
side of sunny Southern California in the same way that
so many of Zevon's songs do, and Pynchon's work was a
direct inspiration for Zevon's underrated 1989 album
"Transverse City."
