Several possible reasons:
1) The California culture tends to vacation a lot in Hawaii.
2) California has a high volume of air traffic with Hawaii.
3) The author may have experienced such a flight.
4) The timing of the flight may have worked best for the author's
intentions.
5) It was selected by random draw.
6) Hawaii is symbolic of Zoyd's isolation at the time.

Still, why not Hong Kong? Or Tokyo? Or a flight up or down the coast?
