Does Vineland drift much beyond California otherwise? 
Can't recall, and I'm not rereading much ahead?  But
taht Pacific Rim thing IS very 80's, no?  But the
important thing perhaps is the flight itself and what
happens on it, and if you gotta fly somehwere to/from
California, well, Hawaii.  And then there's that
Japanese Air Force/Hawaii connection ...
