Vineland underrated

One answer--

All of Pynchon’s novels are, in part or in places,
farcical and comedic, comedy and farce stylistic
elements in a stylistically rich stew.

Vineland, however, is primarily farcical and comedic
and Pynchon’s less-than-copious gifts in this vein
quickly grow tiresome. He's heavy-handed and
unsubtle.  His main method of satire is exaggeration;
he writes like someone who thinks his jokes are
funnier if told in a loud voice. His "comedic"
character names are like a hammer to the skull: Zipi
Pisk, Scott Oof, Willis Chunko, Chef Ti Bruce,
Cleveland ("Blood") Bonnifoy, Baba Havabananda, Ortho
Bob Dulang, Dr. Elasmo, Chickeeta, Sid Liftoff--hardy
har har. And more where they came from.

Floozy with an Uzi, Billy Barf and the Vomitones,
Fruit Loops and Nestle's Quick--very little of this
goes a long way.
