Yeah, the folks in the book (24fps, College of the Surf, Eliot X, Rex,
Zoyd and Frenesi and DL and the Pisk Sisters, Mucho and Van Meter and
so on) do not represent the counterculture (they are another whole sick
crew) and the events in the novel are not historical. Again, Nabokov's
advice to good readers applies: (paraphrased) original authors create
original worlds. Before we can compare the world of the novel with other
worlds we know, we need to do a close study the world the author has
created. Robert is an excellent close reader of the text and he has
studied Pynchon's original worlds in the manner advocated by Nabokov.
If you engage him in a discussion of the text you will discover that a
lot of the historical discussion is really just a waste of time.
However, this Pynchon List can not sustain a discussion of the worlds
Pynchon has created. I know, how about us two guys fight about the
definition of Fascism
again.
