Throughout the novel, we are reminded that we are in the middle of a
Movement, a Revolution, the Reagan Revolution. The 60's movement is all
faded out memory and out of focus film, bitterness and blame it on the
other guy lies, but the Reagan movement is happening. Frequent
references to issues like the Vietnamese and Salvadorian refugees, the
War On Drugs, the Budget deficit, the Trade Deficit, Japanese and German
Autos, clear cutting the Pacific North West, trade union labor (a
concern of Pynchon's since V., he continues to bang away at the history
of Trade Unions--see the Luddite essay), these are the issues that VL
deals with. P pokes his fingers in the eyes of the New Left, that's
obvious enough, isn't it? Goodness me, how could anyone miss it? Well,
if you missed it you should check out Moe next time Larry tries to give
him the old peace sign in the pupils.
