New Jersey, presents the Underground story alongside
that of the German Red Army Faction. Though the groups
were politically similar, the Red Army Faction was
much more fierce than its American counterpart; it
engaged its government in what amounted to a small but
bloody war -- something the Underground threatened but
could not carry out.
The history of the Weather Underground, Varon writes,
is one of ambitious goals -- foremost was the desire
to end the Vietnam War -- betrayed by flawed reasoning
and methodology. Taking their cue from revolutionary
movements in Central America and, to an extent, the
Black Panthers in the United States, the group of
angry middle-class white college kids that would
become Weatherman came together in the late '60s. They
lived in collectives, took drugs, bought guns and
prepared, as the group's literature put it at the
time, "to establish another front against imperialism
right here in America -- to 'bring the war home.' "
