There seems to be in this thread a view of TP as monolithic, as if he were

What he was as a young man, what he is as an older man, how he chooses to 
characterize the young man from the perspective of the older, all this is in play 
in what is available.   

He seems to me to have moved rightward in numerous ways.   He seems also to 
me to have grown timid, also in numerous ways.
