It has been suggested here that THEY could be Heidegger's "man" (cf. 
Being and Time, § 27). And of course Heidegger was a conservative 
ex-catholic. His complex macro-theory of technology (cf. Die Technik
und die Kehre) is definitely closer to Pynchon than pragmatist tool
box manuals. Heidegger's 'eco-spiritual' philosophy of architecture
(cf. Bauen-Wohnen-Denken) seems relevant, too. Now go back to the tube!
