the politics of the lonely crowd

The crowds that thronged the streets of Madrid, like the protesters that
wish to vent their anger against George W Bush, are no more engaged with
society than the people who watch their activities at home on TV. They are
making a personal statement. It is their lifestyle choice Fank Furedi
What a load of horseshit. This guy is the one watching TV. He clearly has never ridden on a bus all night , or crossed an arbitrary line to be arrested in order to make a political stand. These events require organizing effort, and willingness for sacrifice. They reqire people to get off their fat butts and do something. The effort to silence and negate the meaning of political action by ordinary citizens is an egotistical anti-democratic execise in kissing ones own ass. So smooch away Mr. Furedi but I for one find your verbal contortionism to be disgusting.
Micahel Moore is not a "cynic" . He believes in and uses his fredom of speech on behalf of classic American values, like telling the truth. Moore is almost corny in his optimism, while Furedi is full of cynicism and twisted logic. Is his 8 year old really reading Michael Moore? Was a world wide anti-war protest really just a juvenile execise in the mass pursuit of some lost personal meaning. What monumental balderdash.
