"Q:  What constitutes an interview?  If I, say, ask
someone to pass the salt, is that technically an
interview?

A:  Yes, asking someone for the salt is an interview."

It leaves unanswered whether requesting salt or, for
that matter, some other additive, spice, or condiment,
