I think it's the same here. The most people know from history what they 
learnt at school. And let's say, an average German knows that 100 years ago we had 
a monarchy and an emperor, we had colonies and there were strange people 
called "Hottentotten", wild and black and primitive. I would say the last s/he 
knows from his grandfather. That's all.
