He's not really worth getting worked up over.  It's
pretty clear the guy was hired only to stir things up,
given the green light by his editor to be provocative.
 His pieces don't seriously address the novels he
reviews; they're platforms for him to say supposedly
outrageous things about the writers of those novels.  
It's lowbrow entertainment and his failing is in that
context:  not that he isn't a serious critic; rather
that he's not very witty or funny.
