Read Chapter 3 of Joyce's Portrait.

Anything else my child?
Sloth.

The Great Fisher Of Souls, the great soldier who went to the Indies and
brought an thousand souls per day to God, was the fearless founding
Jesuit. Yup, Pynchon never got the great Jesuit education, but it seems
he didn't need one. In any event, he remains in awe of the Jesuits. And
why not?

As far as the Jin in the bottle goes, another inter textual allusion to
the theme--Stoic versus Aquinas-- questions of what is Right and what is
Wrong and How we Measure and how the Fates Spin and Slit the thin spun
life.

The Arabian Nights tale, F&J teaches a lesson about forgiveness and
trust, it's about Justice and Mercy.
