Hello,

I'm not sure if this e-mail went through earlier, but I was wondering if anybody knew of any other passages in Pynchon's fiction that deal explictly with "firstness" or beginning, such as for example the supposed first 1863 military encounter between Russia and America in the Peter Pinguid episode of Lot 49, Vineland being the first name the Vikings gave to the American continent, or William Slothrop being the "first" of Tyrone's ancestors, etc... Thanks!

Birger
