I found it a disappointing essay -- it's a topic which has been discussed
more thoroughly and persuasively by other critics and even in some of the
p-list discussions of the novel. Nevertheless:
'Reel to real: Film history in Pynchon's Vineland' by Ernest
Mathijs. _Literature/Film Quarterly_ 29.1. Salisbury: 2001, pg. 62-70.
Abstract
Contemporary literature often refers to and comments upon film, emphasizing
both its artistic and commercial qualities, and its ability to blur the
distinctions between reality and fiction. Instead of concentrating on
highbrow art cinema, or on films that pretend to be historically
significant, "Vineland" by Thomas Pynchon is much more concerned with
mainstream movies and their popular history.
