Confronted with a 755-dish artistic banquet, I did
what any jaded art critic would do: headed straight
for dessert -- a luscious slice of lemon meringue pie
so enticing it all but levitated on its little white
plate.
Hovering in the center of New York artist Zak Smith's
monumental drawing project at Franklin Art Works
through Jan. 8, the pie sketch is as eye-catching as a
goldfinch among starlings. It is, officially, drawing
No. 333, which means that there are 332 postcard-sized
images lined up before it and 422 following. The
drawings are aptly explained by the project's title:
"One Picture for Every Page of Thomas Pynchon's Novel
'Gravity's Rainbow.' "
Smith's "Rainbow" project was a hit at the Whitney
Biennial in New York City this year, and it lives up
to its well-deserved reputation as a tour de force of
sketching and concept. This is its first showing since
the Biennial, and it heralds the appearance of a
protean 28-year-old talent who could successfully
channel his future energies in myriad directions --
cartooning, filmmaking, graphic design, comic novels,
painting, theater....
