I had two weeks off in November and this was among the books I took away with 
me, with great anticipation.   But I couldn't get past the first section.   
His attempt to write in an antiquated prose style was so unrelentingly cute and 
self-proud I gave up on the rest of the book, knowing I'd have to plow 
through this section to get to what came next.

Pynchon's similar stunt in Mason & Dixon, also often too cute by half, was a 
roaring success compared to this.
