I agree and suspect that Pynchon may have taken
advantage of the opportunity to be interviewed by a
reporter who was also a friend in order to test the
waters, so to speak, to go through the process of
being interviewed and having an article edited and
published, with little chance of making much of a
splash back home. I heard, from an authoritative
source, that a few years ago Pynchon came very near to
being interviewed for an article in a U.S.
publication, but finally chose not to do it. Now that
he's gotten a taste of the process with Playboy Japan,
I wouldn't be surprised at all to see some sort of
interview form the basis for an article here in the
U.S.
