The problem of affiliation by SDS with other organizations continued to
gnaw at internal organization harmony in the early part of 1966. Members
of two communist satellites--W.E.B. Dubois Clubs and M2M (may 2nd
Movement)--entered SDS and vied for influence and ultimate control.
Pressures from both groups provided disputes within SDS chapters on the
propriety of collaborating.
The opponents of collaboration argued that SDS should work in the
Universities and not in front of the Post Office or the draft board.
But, by May of 1968 the Communist Party, although they initially
condemned SDS-led campus activities as both disordered and premature,
decided to try to win over SDS members to the Communist Party's ideology
and tactics and recruit SDSers into DCA or the Party itself.
The Party's wooing of SDS included gifts of money through individual
Party members. And, when SDS invited the Party into SDS to help stem the
growing influence of the Pro-Peking PLP faction in SDS, the Party
exploited the factional infighting for its own purposes.
