Y'all know that I've got my speculative metaphysics.
One element of it is that fore-knowledge is possible,
which I take to be simply improbable in large bodies,
not impossible, in light of quantum mechanics. Maybe
fine brain structure is actually of the right size to
engage the universe strongly when working coherently,
which I have read is called "wet quantum mechanics".
Now for the most salient of my many such anecdotes.
When I was a boy, I would have frequent nightmares,
waking up yelling and causing my parents to come in.
The dream scene that I was seeing was of a compact
automobile, seeing the driver's side, with a driver
seen in the window, who was looking at me, sort of
with both arms raised up out of the window, as if
to signal that the driver is in distress and wants
to be picked up by his parents, although I do not
recall the dreaming boy knew any identification
with the driver, perhaps for he at that age still
cannot drive, but the boy is captive in the car.
And the car perched atop a single narrow pinnacle
is rocking fore and aft, perhaps 10 or 20 degrees
each way. The sense of fear is of falling off the
pinnacle, for it comes to a point, like a cartoon
mountain, and the car up there is just not secure.
The mountain rises out of an abyss, which crevases
either side continue past the bottom of the vision.
The peak rises back up to an apparent ground level
which is noted outside the abyss, like serifs on a
letter W, at about 20% from the top of the vision.
The mountain and ground are black, the abyss blacker.
The wheels are turning and the car is rocking. Yikes!
Over the past years, what with Freud, and Nietzsche's
father dream, and Jung's subterranean phallus, I have
tried to read into this dark pinnacle the phallus of
my father, thinking maybe parental coitus caused it.
But now I know fixedly its final future referent.
You see, since '89 I've lived in the "high dessert"
and work "down below", and a seventy mile commute is
performed twice daily, usually in the dark, and the
pitch of the car varies the same 10 or 20 degrees,
and the night is darker than the ground, and looking
off the highway, one cannot even see to the bottom.
Anyway, I'm pretty big on pushing the possibilities,
not only of foreknowledge, but retropsychocausation.
Yours truly,
Glenn Scheper
