... is a book I'm currently reading, by Ioan P.
Couliano, published by University of Chicago Press,
with a foreword by Mircea Eliade.  

It's referenced many times in a book that Dave Monroe
suggested a while back, _The Secret Life of Puppets_
by Victoria Nelson, which includes some serious
coverage of Pynchon.

Couliano's book also promises to be of great interest
to Pynchon readers.  re Vineland, it offers
interesting context in which to consider Zoyd's
masturbation and fantasizing about Frenesi.
