I don't think the point is irrelevant, because it adds to the other hints
that there was more going on than just Frenesi's liaison with Brock, and
Weed's visits to Elasmo. Why does Rex leave his fringe bag behind -- "for
the first time in anyone's memory" (243) -- on that particular day?

I agree that Frenesi willingly takes the gun, willingly puts it into Rex's
bag, and willingly lies that "Weed is an FBI plant" (234). In fact, *she* is
the FBI plant. Frenesi consciously and knowingly acts as an angel of death.
Without her active and deliberate interventions Weed would not have been
shot. The text does not excuse her involvement in the murder in any way.
