Don't know if Rex was rich or poor but having a fancy car (even a
Porsche) in the American sixties was not a sign of privilege or
affluence. People bought cars on very easy to get credit and paid off
the loan in easy monthly payments.
Of course the other side to the story was that the repossession business
flourished. For all we know the finance company was already well on the
trail of Rex. When Rex hands over the pink slip (California auto titles
are pink) we don't learn whether or not the title was unencumbered. For
all we know the name of some financing company appeared on it along with
Rex's. Elliot X might not have bothered to notice or care. Everything
was so transitory.
