TWO-THIRDS (67%) OF AMERICANS SUPPORT TELEVISED
EXECUTIONS, WITH ONE IN FIVE AMERICANS WILLING TO PAY
FOR THE PRIVILEGE OF WATCHING, ACCORDING TO TRIO POLL
Majority of Americans Believe That TV Coverage Alters
Outcome of Media Events Including War, School
Shootings, Terrorist Attacks and Political Campaigns
New York, February 23, 2004 - It's no secret that
America has recently voiced its opposition to baring
it all on television. But according to a
newly-released TRIO poll, two-thirds (67%) of
Americans would support the idea of televised
executions, and 21% would have no problem paying to
see the televised execution of Osama Bin Laden.
The poll, conducted by Harris for TRIO as part of the
pop culture channel's UNCOVERED TV month of
programming in March, proves that television viewers
will sometimes cross some lines of personal taste when
presented with a programming option that suits their
fancy. Some of the results follow:
WOULD YOU WATCH A TELEVISED AUTOPSY OR EXECUTION?
Although just over half of those polled (54%) say they
wouldn't watch an autopsy if it were televised, only
33% of American's opposed the idea of televised
executions, with over two-thirds of Americans
supporting the idea of televised executions. Of those
asked, 30% said they would watch the execution of
Osama Bin Laden if offered the opportunity.
Only one in five (18%) said Saddam Hussein's execution
had the same appeal.
Scott Peterson, accused of killing his wife Lacey, was
less of a viewing preference for most with only 5% of
Americans interested in seeing his execution live on
television.
And if the broadcast networks aren't interested in
that kind of event, then pay-per-view executives take
note: one in five Americans (20%) would be willing to
put up cash to see the execution of the Al Qaeda
leader on the small screen. Saddam Hussein's
pay-per-view buy rate wouldn't be as impressive, with
only 11% of Americans willing to throw their cash on
the table to see the former King of Iraq put to death.
