Continuing with the theme of constructed realities and source(s)
of illumination, Sledge Poteet's assessment of Mr. Vond's worth
in terms of foot candles:

" 'Sucker ain't worth no Zippo flame on a cloudy night" (201)

Echoes for me the Lennon/McCarthy line from their "Let It Be"

...And when the night is cloudy
There is still a light that shines on me...

An idealist hippie overture if ever there were one, but almost
reflexively bringing to mind The Stones "Let It Bleed," perhaps
a more realistic indicator of where the hippie scene was headed,
and would crash land, in effect, at Altamount, when a young
Afro-American, maybe pointing a gun, would be murdered on film.
The production values were professional grade.

Later in the novel, Frenesi's preferences to "actively commit
energy by pouring in as much light..." will be demonstrated in
the film documentation of Weed Atman's murder. A scene which
aesthetically, at any rate, strongly echoes the assasination of
Robert F. Kennedy, in the kitchen of the Ambassador Hotel, Los
Angeles, June 5, 1968:
